I’ll be honest… I spent years dreaming about traveling abroad before I finally booked that first solo trip. I imagined everything that could go wrong, but I rarely thought about everything that could go right.
If you’re waiting until you feel completely ready, you may be waiting forever.
What I wish I knew is that confidence doesn’t usually come before the trip. It comes because you took the trip. Start with a destination that genuinely excites you, give yourself plenty of time to plan, and don’t feel pressured to see everything in one visit. Some of my favorite travel memories came from slow mornings at neighborhood cafés, conversations with locals, and wandering streets without a strict itinerary.

Another lesson I learned is that confidence doesn’t come from having every detail figured out. It comes from being prepared for the unexpected. Before every trip, I make sure I have backups for the things I rely on most. That might mean carrying a portable charger, saving digital and printed copies of important documents, packing backup devices, tucking extra cash in different places, or having a second way to access money if a card is lost or doesn’t work.
You’ll probably feel nervous before your flight. That’s normal. I still get butterflies before traveling somewhere new. But I’ve learned that those feelings are often excitement wearing a different disguise.

The goal for your first solo trip isn’t to eliminate fear. It’s to prepare well enough that fear doesn’t get the final say.
Take. The. Trip.
