A guided walking tour is one of the best ways to discover Casco Viejo, Panama City’s UNESCO World Heritage district. As you wander its cobblestone streets, you’ll explore colorful plazas, historic churches, rooftop viewpoints, cafés, local shops, and the stories that shaped modern Panama.
While you’re in Casco Viejo, I also recommend stopping by the Panama Canal Museum (Museo del Canal Interoceánico). Located just off Plaza de la Independencia. It’s important to know that this is different from the Miraflores Visitor Center. The Canal Museum focuses on the history, politics, engineering, and human stories behind the canal.

Option 2: Panamá Viejo
Best for Learning About The Original Panama City
Long before Casco Viejo was built, Panama’s first Spanish settlement stood a few miles away at Panamá Viejo. Founded in 1519, it became the first permanent European settlement on the Pacific coast of the Americas before being attacked and largely destroyed by the pirate Henry Morgan in 1671.
Today, visitors can explore the archaeological site, walk among centuries-old stone ruins, and climb the cathedral bell tower for panoramic views of modern Panama City.
You can visit independently or join a guided tour for additional historical context.

Stretching into the Pacific Ocean, La Calzada de Amador (the Amador Causeway) is one of my favorite places to spend a few relaxed hours in Panama City.
Rent a bicycle or scooter and ride along the waterfront while enjoying panoramic views of the city skyline, the Bridge of the Americas, ships waiting to enter the Panama Canal, and nearby islands. Along the way you’ll find cafés, restaurants, marinas, public art, and attractions like the Biomuseo and the Smithsonian’s Punta Culebra Nature Center.
It’s an easy activity to combine with a canal tour or a visit to Casco Viejo.
